“Open mind and open doors, the people with disabilities and their families need mentoring and opportunity for inclusion in to civil society”
It is seen too often that students with intellectual disabilities aren’t encouraged to consider higher vocational education for their future. But 17 years ago this dream of higher education for disabled people was seen by Dr Alok Kumar and made it true by laying the foundation of Manovikas Institute for Higher Education (MIHE) in 2010 ,wherein individuals with an intellectual disability are obtaining a high-quality, individualized post-secondary education that leads to social and professional networks, careers and a bright future ahead .
After working at a leading NGO, Dr Alok started Manovikas, through working for the rehabilitation of the intellectually delayed. In this period, his focus was on vocational training that got honed by his selection for training in Japan under Exchange Programme on Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment of PWDs; and on return he started similar work here through his venture.
The classes at Manovikas Institute are different than the special schools because everything is different: the teachers, classmates and subjects are different. Students get ample opportunities for practical experience to support academic tuition along with Recognition of prior learning. The admissions are free in credit based Certificate and Diploma for employable knowledge and skills.
Manovikas Institute for Higher Education is particularly providing the program as a Skill Knowledge Service provider focused on serving the public under Persons with Disability Skill Council (PwDSC) formed with the support of Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Ministry of Social Justice (MSJE). This inclusive initiative is intended to strengthen our academic community and the broader community as well. The certificate and Diploma Courses at the institute provides an opportunity for students to enrich and enhance their personal and academic development in a fully inclusive environment. Prospective Certificate and Diploma Courses will find meaningful experiences that will enhance their personal growth socially, academically and vocationally. The scholarships too are available by NHFDC, Govt. of India and we provide 100% job assurance.
“Our alumni are working in Haldiram’s, barista, CCD, along with the travel agencies. They earn about Rs.6500 to Rs10000 per month.” says Dr Alok
The students with disabilities are motivated to learn more job oriented skill training. Recently in April 2015 the organization was rewarded as the Best NGO by the Federation of Disabled Peoples Organisation.
