It seems most Indian cities are not good enough for living and working. That’s what a globally recognized survey has shown.
However, among all the Indian cities, Hyderabad is the most livable one, according to the Mercer 2017 Quality of Living Index. It’s ranked at 144. Pune and Bengaluru have both slipped by one rank to 145 and 146, respectively, in this year’s ranking.
Delhi has been the ranked the lowest among the Indian cities for the second year in a row, according to the survey. It ranked at 161.
Globally, as the survey shows, Vienna is the best place for overall quality of living. Vienna has been on the top spot for eight consecutive years. The rest of the top-ten list are mostly filled by European cities– Zurich (2), Munich (4), Dusseldorf (6), Frankfurt (7), Geneva (8), Copenhagen (9), and Basel, a newcomer to the list, in 10th place.
The survey notes that “relatively lower crime rate, lesser air pollution and improved options for international and reputable English speaking schools” are the things that worked Hyderabad’s favour. The decreased power supply and water availability made it slip five places from last year.
Delhi’s ‘notorious’ crime rate beats the other positives keeping it at a low rank on the list.
“The survey highlights that Indian cities that have been part of the survey haven’t made much progress on the quality of living scale since last year ,” Ruchika Pal, Principal and India Practice Leader, Global Mobility said.
