Maasika Mahotsav, India’s One-of-a-Kind Menstruation Festival to take place in Mumbai this Sunday

Mumbai: A Period of Sharing, an initiative by Muse in association with Muskurahat Foundation for debunking taboos and spreading awareness about Sustainable Menstruation, has launched a one-of-a-kind festival, Masika Mahotsav or Menstruation Festival. The Mahotsav comprises a series of insightful events happening in Mumbai from May 21 to May 28. The festival culminates on the World Menstrual Hygiene day that is celebrated across the world on May 28. The Mahotsav is being organized in partnership with Rotaract Club of Kishanchand Chellaram College.

The concept of festival was coined by ‘A Period of Sharing’ in order to break the menstrual taboos that has been affecting millions of lives in India. The rationale being that celebration denotes happiness and gives an opportunity for people to come together, talking about menstruation through songs, dance and sports at the festival would mean an easy way to normalize the otherwise forbidden word Menstruation.

Awareness on Sustainable Menstruation is the need of the hour. Disseminating knowledge about cloth pads and menstrual cups have become extremely crucial. There is a much need to eradicate the notions and misconceptions related to menstruation too. Having to sleep separately, not touching the pickle, no entry to the temples have all been prevalent in our society for long. Masika Mahotsav aims to address these issues through the concept of festival.
