Geeta Shankar, the Founder and Managing Trustee of Omashram Trust – Old Age Care in Bangalore is a lady with lot of poise and compassion towards the needy. She is an angelic soul who is working towards the cause of the neglected elders by their families since the last 15 years.
Omashram Trust-Old Age Care is a charitable trust formed with the objective to provide care to the abandoned elderly in the evening of their lives. Established in the year 2001 by Geeta it is presently housing 65 Elderly residents. Through it she provides the medical facilities, medical psychiatric counselling, entertainment and care to the elderly. It’s like a home away from home for the elderly who mostly belongs to the poor or middle-class families and are above 60 denominations.
There is a full provision of residential lodging and entertainment for these people at Omashram and for the bed ridden old people a special staff to look after them is also employed. A lot of yoga and meditation classes too are carried out under the supervision of Geeta inorder to keep the health of the elderly fit and strong. From time to time a lot of entertaining events and musical nights are organized by the team of Omashram so that the elderly can enjoy and rejuvenate happiness in their lives.
Currently getting funding through small payments from the financially secure residents, meal sponsors, Cash/Kind donations from corporates and other well wishers, the Omashram Trust under the superb guidance of Geeta is able to provide the best care and home to the elderly souls.
She says “Challenges were many-But nothing stopped us from following the dream and since the inception more than 500 elders have been given a home and care”.
For her amazing work she has been felicitated with the REX Karmaveer Chakra (Gold)-New Delhi- for excellent services for the Elderly, REX Global Fellowship-New Delhi-For services and recognition of other Causes., Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award- By Indian Solidarity Council-New Delhi-For Outstanding Achievements etc. She is also working towards the cause of tribal children and also towards the education of underprivileged children.
Talking about the future plans she says “Honestly, to shut down all the Old Age Homes around and unite the family. But impossible to think about it, after seeing that it is the need of the hour. Hence, we would create a large family of parents and children while combining an Orphanage with our Old Age Home, for which we need some Angel to help us with an infrastructure of our own.”
