Yesteryear actress Geeta Kapoor, best known for her role in Meena Kumari starrer Pakeezah is in news for heartbreaking reasons. The 58-year-old senior citizen has been abandoned by her son, Raja who is choreographer by profession at SRV Hospital in Goregaon, Mumbai. According to reports, Geeta Kapoor was admitted in poor malnourished condition and she admitted of also beaten up by her son. It has been more than a month, the old mother is wailing desperately for her son and family to take her back home. Geeta Kapoor’s crying pictures and videos on the social media caught the attention of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) member Ashoke Pandit and film producer Ramesh Taurani who paid for her medical bills that ran up to Rs 1.5 lakhs. But still there is no sign of her heartless son who left her unwell ageing mother in despair.
According to Indian Express reports, Ashoke Pandit paid for Geeta Kapoor’s hospital bills and treatment. He was quoted saying, “I came to know that an old lady named Geeta Kapoor has been abandoned in a Mumbai hospital by her children only after reading about it in the newspapers. I didn’t know Geeta Kapoor is the Geeta Kapoor from Pakeezah.” Pandit and Ramesh Taurani are now trying to get an NOC from the senior actress’ son so that they can send her to an old age home.
Hearing a wailing old mother at her child’s cruelty, even the coldest of hearts would melt. A video of TV9 special coverage showed Geeta Kapoor narrating her story as a junior artist. She worked in cult classic film Pakeezah starring Meena Kumari, Raaj Kumar and Ashok Kumar. Wiping her tears away, the old actress is seen telling her how it has been over a month that she has been in the hospital, but no one has come from her family to see or get her discharged. She did not suspect on son Raja when he got her admitted to the hospital on April 21.
According to the TOI reports, “As soon as the ambulance brought her to the hospital, the son asked if a deposit had to be paid. He left the hospital on the pretext of looking for an ATM and never returned. Since admission, no one from the family has asked about her,” said Dr Dipendra Tripathi, chief intensivist of the hospital. The doctors said the senior citizen was malnourished and that her BP was low. One of the doctors said, “She was definitely not well-fed” and after abandonment, she is battling depression.
Speaking to Mid-Day, Geeta revealed how Raja used to beat her up. “He used to beat me up as I did not approve of his philandering ways. He would give me food once in four days, and sometimes, even lock me up for several days. I was not ready to go to an old-age home, that’s why, he planned all this. He deliberately kept me hungry and I fell ill. Then, he got me admitted and fled.”
Her medical bills ran up to 1.5 lakhs, and the hospital authorities’ efforts to get in touch with either Raja or any of Geeta Kapoor’s family members have failed. They have lodged the complaint with the police, but Raja Kapoor remains untraceable. As a matter of fact, he has rented out of the flat right after admitting his mother at the hospital, making it clear that this was a well-thought of a plan to get rid of his ailing mother.
