Swachh Bharat Reality In UP: People Take Rs 12,000 To Build Toilets But Dig Just Holes Instead

In the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, cases have been unearthed where either a pothole has been dug or a seat has been given to construct a toilet, exposing a scam worth lakhs under the ambit of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, Swachh Bharat is now reduced to papers, without any actual implementation, at least in Etawah.

After the scam was exposed, the state government has taken away the authority from the village head to construct toilets under the scheme. A report in Jansatta reveals the government used to give Rs 500 to the beneficiaries for the construction of toilets in 2004 and in 2007, the amount was raised to Rs 2,200.

The government now gives Rs 12,000 for toilet construction. The amount has been withdrawn by many, however, the toilets were never constructed. The BPL list reveals the name of people who have withdrawn the amount, however, no toilets have been constructed till date.

Ramsewak, whose name is on the 84th spot in the list, withdrew the amount but only a hole has been dug in the name of the construction.
